Went to “Hakata Gomasabaya” for Fukuoka’s Local Specialty | Solo Hakata Trip in My 30s

When I travelled alone to Fukuoka, I visited ‘Hakata Gomasabaya’.

It is a popular restaurant where you can enjoy fresh mackerel dishes.

In particular, the local Fukuoka speciality ‘gomasaba’ is an outstanding dish of mackerel sashimi topped with a special sauce and sesame seeds.

It is close to the downtown area and is visited not only by tourists but also by many locals!

Went to ‘Hakata Gomasabaya’ for Fukuoka’s Local Specialties!

I went to ‘Hakata Gomasabaya’, located on Showa-dori in Chuo Ward, Fukuoka City.

Here’s where ‘Hakata Gomasabaya’ is located

It is about a 9-minute walk from Tenjin Station.

Here’s what the restaurant looks like

It has the cosy appearance of a traditional set-meal place!

Here’s the inside of the restaurant

Since it was a Saturday night, it was very lively.

Here’s the menu

Here’s the drinks menu

The marinated fried mackerel (nanbanzuke) was available as self-serve.

You can enjoy this while you are waiting for your order!

Honestly, it was tasty enough that I would gladly pay for it (゚-゚)

This is the ‘Gomasaba Rice Bowl Set Meal’.

The rice portion is generous, and it comes with plenty of small side dishes.

Here is the ‘gomasaba’ itself.

It is topped with chopped spring onion and wasabi.

Here are the miso soup and a small bowl of hijiki seaweed.

This is the cabbage and carrot salad.

As you would expect from a place famous for gomasaba, it came with sesame dressing!

Fresh mackerel sashimi is mixed with their special sauce and sesame seeds.

You can help yourself to ochazuke broth!

It is perfect as a finishing touch to the meal.

It tends to get a bit crowded in the evening, so try to visit with plenty of time to spare!

Who I recommend this place for

  • You want to try the Fukuoka speciality ‘gomasaba’.
  • You are planning to stay around the Tenjin area.

That’s all from me.
